The cultural Capitalism

Slavoj Zizek is a Slovenian philosopher whose work integrates Jacques Lacan’s thoughts with Marxism and in which he highlights a trend to exemplify the theory through popular culture. Today, he is the International Director for the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (Birkbeck College/University of London).

In this illustrated video he explains his idea about ‘cultural capitalism’ (the one after May 1968, he says) and how it has integrated the profit motive with the ethic awareness in the same act to redeem the feeling of being mere consumers: now, we buy coffee, shoes or products, which are not what they seem; they are fair trade, help to starving children in some far-away place or respect for the environment.
